1. What do you do?
I am the Back-end Developer & Dev Operations at Bookmark Montreal. The development aspect of my job involves writing the “server side” logic for web applications. In other words, handling everything that happens after a user carries out an action like clicking on a button. As for development operations, I am currently migrating the websites that we host into the cloud and updating/optimizing the current IT architecture.
2. What past experiences are you eager to share with your team/Bookmark?
I have done a lot of machine learning and predictive analytics in the past and I’m looking forward to applying those practices at Bookmark.
3. What attracted you to Bookmark?
I was drawn by the energy of the supervisor and the developer who interviewed me. I also really like the company’s website, it’s simple and very elegant.
4. What aspect of your new job are you most looking forward to?
Moving Bookmark from its current IT architecture into cloud computing. The cloud is the present as well as the future and I can’t wait to leverage the power of the cloud once we are fully migrated and integrated.
5. In your opinion, what makes for good content?
I believe good content is content that answers a question before it is even posed. With the advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning, good current day content should speak to humans and bots at the same time without sounding robotic. The blog post Write for Humans, Optimize for Machines written by our Marketing Director addresses just that.
6. What do you like to do in your spare time?
I am currently learning to play the piano. I think the artistry that is required to master the piano and music as a whole is fascinating. I also do some swimming and running during the summer and I like to cook when I have the time.
7. What’s the last thing you read/saw that inspired you?
An article on the combination of voice, VR and IoT (Internet of Things). The article depicts how one can use a voice interface like Amazon’s Echo to tell Alexa to turn off the lights, lock the doors, take you to the beach via a VR like Oculus and start your favorite Netflix movie. I look forward to being involved in the developmental aspects of this type of tech at some point in my career.
8. What are your top 5 must-see destinations?
– London, England
– Kigali, Rwanda
– Nairobi, Kenya
– Rome, Italy
– Shanghai, China
9. What is the one thing your colleagues have yet to find out about you?
I’m a good soccer player.
10. What is the one piece of advice that has helped you the most since you started working in this industry?
Stay open minded, welcome change and keep learning. You cannot survive in an industry like tech if you don’t evolve because as we all know, technology is constantly changing. I also think that one should focus on the fundamentals as opposed to the trends since those come and go but fundamentals almost always withstand the test of time.
